5.30 on a Saturday morning is not the sort of time I would be usually be getting up to watch a 5f sprint in Australia but this was no normal sprint. This was the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes that saw the brilliant undefeated mare The Wonder From Down Under Black Caviar return to the track eight months on from her historic win at Royal Ascot where she scrambled home despite carrying a injury to win The Golden Jubilee Stakes.
Today she was back home racing in front of her legions of fans at Flemington and despite her eight month lay off she looked in as good as condition as we have ever seen her and once the gates opened there was only ever going to be one winner as sent straight towards the front by her regular partner Luck Nolan she put in some exceptional sectional times as she blew the opposition away only needed to be nudged out to register a very comfortable 2 1/2 length victory, never being remotely challenged to win this prestigious Group 1 race for the 3rd time and breaking the 5f track record in the process that had previously stood for 25 years.
